To start rugs hooking you may need the following tools: a drawing that serves as a pattern, scraps of fabric in colors to suit your pattern, a hook that can be purchased in many stores, scissors, a masking tape, a permanent marker, yarn to match your fabric scraps, a big needle and straight pins at last.

First of all, cut the fabric into strips that are about 1 inch wide and about 15 inches long.

For thick fabrics like wool, cut narrower strips. For thin fabrics like cotton, cut wider strips. You should cut very carefully to avoid fraying. If you are a first-timer, you had better not cut all of the fabric at once, but rather cut several strips at a time until you determine if the width you have cut is suitable for rugs hooking.
